Vladimir Ershov, a.k.a. PROFF, has witnessed an unforgettable year as both a producer and DJ, with a series of chart-topping hits on Anjunadeep, as well as a massive tour throughout his native Russian Federation (alongside labelmates Above & Beyond). The Original Mix of “Starstruck” conveys this excitement, firing out of the gate with a jubilant arpeggio. The breakdown is equally euphoric: newly added synth stabs “flash” in wide-stereo glory, as if imitating the unexpected onslaught of paparazzi. Fellow Silk (and Anjunadeep) artists Solarity provide the first of two remixes on the package. In vintage form, they have completely reinvented the central groove of the tune, underscored by a signature electro-prog bassline. Rising Japanese artist Shingo Nakamura (Silk Digital, Mango Alley, Proton Music, Morphosis) also continues to garner attention for his prolific output of high-quality productions. His interpretation is slightly more chilled, as he re-imagines the original as a piano-driven piece. Ever since his summer 2008 smash “Fifth Exit,” Irish artist Sean Marx has received the support and praise of the world’s biggest DJ’s, including Armin, Above & Beyond, and Markus Schulz. Sean’s debut with Silk Royal, a three-track EP, once again showcases his characteristically heavy-hitting beats, sparkling arpeggios, and emotional, anthemic breakdowns. The package beings with the title cut, “Do Mo Chailín,” in which brilliantly blended arpeggios are supported by a chunky bassline. The breakdown offers even more magic, as the beats are stripped away and a beautiful lead melody emerges. The second track, “Evolve,” is a vintage Sean Marx peak-hour stormer, with a furious bassline and stunning lead arpeggio. Last but not least, “Through the Static” once again employs a glorious lead arp and a trance-influenced bassline. In addition, the track offers a cinematic breakdown, in which an echoing dialogue sample creates great anticipation for the huge drop to follow.

Matías Aguayo – Ay ay ay

Voces superpuestas en idiomas indescifrables. Onomatopeyas ordenadas como si fuesen agudos versos poético. Pulsos con apariencia electrónica levantados sin un solo enchufe. El mejor disco grabado este año por un músico chileno es, también, el más extraño. Su condición innovadora -este asombroso tejido sonoro obliga en varios momentos a afirmar la mandíbula- no le quita hermosura. Ay ay ay es un gran disco no por la innovación de su apuesta: ésta es música que sorprende pero que luego seduce, y que se queda en el auditor por efecto de su encanto, no por simple deslumbramiento.

Nacido en Santiago en 1973, Aguayo reside hoy en Buenos Aires luego de una infancia y adolescencia forjada en Alemania. Su aproximación a la música electrónica fue dándose con la misma vivacidad y rigor que en varios otros hijos de chilenos exiliados en ese país europeo, pero Aguayo ha enriquecido en los últimos años ese molde tecno central con experiencias de viajes, musicalización callejera y colaboraciones que impedirían hoy asociarlo puramente a la música de baile. Ay ay ay es el disco de un ex DJ que hoy elige trabajar de un modo más orgánico, y en cuyo interés por la experimentación con el loopeo y otros efectos de voces encontró en el productor Vicente Sanfuentes al compañero ideal.

Original Hamster sostuvo muchas de sus presentaciones con imaginativos juegos sobre el micrófono. También la experimentación a capella ha nutrido los discos de artistas recientes, como la francesa Camille o la argentina Juana Molina. Pero el efecto en el trabajo de Aguayo es aún más envolvente: por la diversidad de pulsos, por la ductilidad de esos timbres (articulados en palabras, susurros, gemidos o lo que venga) y por la cita a sonidos rápidamente asociables a la música andina (“Juanita”) o africana (“Koro koro”). Así de peculiar. El single “Rollerskate” es un tema de capas envolventes pero no por eso atiborrado: la frescura que exuda (femenina, casi) es parte del misterio de un disco que engaña al oído, bypasea la cabeza, y se va directamente al corazón y la parte baja del estómago para producirnos un placentero mareo como hace tiempo no sentíamos.
